Union Government of India declared entire Nagaland as disturbed area. Joint Secretary in the Home Ministry Shambu Singh said in the notification that armed forces should assist the civil administration in maintaining law and order.
This statement by Home Secretary has totally ruled out repealing of Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958, which give Armed Forces special rights to interrogate and arrest anyone even on suspicion basis. This has been a hot issue in Nagaland state assembly and there are protests against this law throughout the state.
The decision came almost a month after NSCN-K, the dominant Naga rebel group, attacked an army convoy in Manipur’s Chandel district and killed 18 soldiers.
